The first two of a total of 14 battery electric articulated buses, manufactured by New Flyer of America Inc., have arrived in St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe introduction of these battery electric buses into the MetroBus fleet next year represents our commitment to providing economically and environmentally sustainable mobility options as well as an excellent transit experience for our riders,\u201d said Jessica Mefford-Miller, Metro Transit Executive Director. \u201cWe will be leaner and greener by introducing this battery electric bus technology, not just with the buses but also through the charging infrastructure and operating facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-tires-300x190.png\" alt=\"New 60-foot battery electric bus coming to Metro Transit\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-tires-300x190.png 300w, https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-tires-768x486.png 768w, https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-tires.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The 60-foot battery electric buses have 320 kilowatts of battery storage on each bus. That is enough power to support about 10 2,000-square-foot houses for an entire day. They will operate exclusively on the #70 MetroBus route, which is Metro\u2019s\u00a0busiest\u00a0route and\u00a0carries\u00a0about\u00a010 percent of\u00a0Metro\u2019s customers on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>Since these battery electric buses do not have combustion engines or transmission systems, they will offer substantial savings for taxpayers over the life of the buses, which is about 15 years.\u00a0Metro Transit estimates a\u00a0savings of\u00a0about\u00a0$105,000 in diesel fuel and another $125,000 in maintenance costs over the life of the buses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese\u00a0buses deliver incredible benefits for the St. Louis region. In addition to the potential cost-savings they offer taxpayers, they are also\u00a0zero\u00a0emissions,\u00a0and\u00a0each\u00a0year\u00a0they will provide a reduction of 100 to 160 tons\u00a0of\u00a0greenhouse\u00a0gas\u00a0emissions when\u00a0compared\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0diesel\u00a0bus,\u201d said Taulby Roach, President and Chief Executive Officer at Bi-State Development.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215957\" src=\"https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-interior-300x193.png\" alt=\"Interior of the new 60-foot battery electric bus coming to Metro Transit\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-interior-300x193.png 300w, https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-interior-768x494.png 768w, https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-interior.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The battery electric bus program builds on the commitment of Ameren Missouri and Metro Transit to continually find innovative ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmeren has made a commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and we\u2019re eager to help our customers as they also transition to cleaner energy. The $11.3 million investment upgrades the power supply to triple capacity and modernizes the energy system for the area. The substation also features smart technology, including new automated sensors, switches and self-healing equipment to more rapidly detect and isolate damage in order to restore power quicker.<\/p>\n<p>Charging infrastructure is currently under construction at the Brentwood MetroBus facility and construction will begin in the near future to add new infrastructure at the Broadway &amp; Taylor Transit Center to charge buses while they are in service.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215928\" src=\"https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-passenger-side2-300x197.png\" alt=\"New 60-foot battery electric bus coming to Metro Transit\" width=\"300\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-passenger-side2-300x197.png 300w, https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-passenger-side2-768x505.png 768w, https:\/\/www.metrostlouis.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/electric-bus-passenger-side2.png 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cThis is a landmark investment in American infrastructure and zero-emission technology, and we\u2019re pleased to provide sustainable mobility solutions through buses, technology, and infrastructure,\u201d said Chris Stoddart, President, New Flyer. \u201cMetro is leading sustainable mobility and shaping the community\u2019s quality of life for the better. Together, we\u2019re making the evolution to electric a reality for greater St. Louis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the battery electric articulated buses, Metro Transit will also introduce four 40-foot battery electric buses made by GILLIG into the MetroBus fleet.
